Zavelstein is well known for its crocus blossom. The wild crocus is actually native to the Mediterranean region and can only be found in a few locations north of the Alps. From around the beginning of March, the warm spring sun attracts countless blossoms in all shades between blue-violet and white. There are numerous stories and legends about the origin of the wild crocus. It is assumed that Benjamin Buwinghausen von Wallmerode brought the crocus bulbs back from a trip abroad around 1620 and had them planted in the palace garden. From there, the spread of the crocus took its course in the Zavelstein cottage gardens over the fields to the neighboring towns.
Tip: The area around the crocus meadows is very busy, especially on the weekends. In order to avoid all of them, we recommend visiting the meadows early in the morning or in the evening - great light included!
