The landscape of the Kalkense Meersen was modeled in the late Ice Age by an early meander of the Scheldt. Over the centuries, the river moved south. What remained is a collection of sub-areas, each with its own character. Via an old church road we walk straight through the historic grasslands of the Molenmeersen. Now and then flints turn up here, which in prehistoric times were used to scrape skins or served as spear points. The ditches in the area were used as flax root pits in the 19th century. The flax was laid to 'rotate' here: an essential step in the process of flax processing, which was accompanied by an unbearable stench.Source: routes.be
