Vast, wet, flower-filled meadows, expansive tranquility, and a touch of outdoor art—these are the ingredients for a day of pure enjoyment in the Kalkense Meersen. At 600 hectares, this nature reserve is one of the last extensive Scheldt meadows and lies at the heart of an extensive cycling and hiking network.

You can easily explore the area via the Kalkense Meersen Donkmeer hiking network. The network offers 165 km of green tranquility—these are the places that stay with you. Thanks to their impressive expanse, the abundance of birds, the tranquility, and the combination of land and water. But also because of the simple beauty of what you see.

More, more, discovering the most beautiful lakes... Well-booted, we begin our discovery tour after the bell rang in Schellebelle. The ferryman brings the adventurers safely across.

We follow the Scheldt for a while and then delve into the meadow area. Large grazers welcome us...

The search continues to the Old Scheldt Arm, where we encounter numerous courting bird species.

We leave the courtship to our feathered friends. Meandering, we continue from one meadow to the next. The wet, marshy grasslands with their accompanying ditches follow one another in quick succession. We lose count... Once in Kalken, we ask for advice and a blessing from Saint Nijs and return at a rapid pace along the Kalkenvaart canal. We have one last drink at Den Aard before returning to the other side. At the Roepkot on the Grote Plaetse, we shout out, "More, more, the most beautiful lakes, it was fun!"
