    Castle of Opleeuw, Gors-Opleeuw

Opleeuw Castle is located on Mettekovenstraat in Gors-Opleeuw (Borgloon). The whitewashed castle in brick and bluestone is only a third of the original U-shaped castle. It was built in neo-rococo style. The date 1874 refers to a restoration. The two parallel service buildings, which are remnants of the original courtyard, date in their current appearance between ca.1740 and ca.1775. The castle was protected as a monument in 2004. The surroundings of the castle and the castle farm form a protected village view

In the oldest representation, the castle is a U-shaped building in Maas style, dating from the 17th century, with baroque finishing for doors and gates. It is completely surrounded by a moat. The open side of the courtyard is connected by a drawbridge to the southern courtyard, also U-shaped, with the open side of the yard towards the castle, on the other side provided with a gatehouse.

The castle itself currently consists of a central wing with two transverse, short wings at the ends, which on the north side, clearly conceived as a façade, are provided with two towers. The courtyard is preserved, but is now completely closed by the addition of a wing on the previously open side towards the castle; the two parallel wings to the east and west of the yard are given their current, classicist appearance.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a further building campaign takes place: the classicist castle is shortened on the east side, whereby the eastern, perpendicular wing disappears.

It is now a T-shaped complex under mansard roofs, with the wall openings possibly being adapted in late classicist style. It is still surrounded by a moat, and the 17th-century farmyard with gatehouse is still present; the chapel, still indicated on the Ferraris map, has disappeared, however.

Another renovation took place in the second quarter of the 19th century. The moat has disappeared, as have the northern and southern wings of the farmyard; the latter is now closed off by a fence on the south side. The service buildings have been extended with two semicircular wings in neoclassical style, to the east and west, so that secondary yards are created here. The afforestation behind the castle has been considerably reduced, the avenue system has been greatly reduced; the construction of the English park probably dates from this period.

A final building campaign dates from 1874. The classicist castle is demolished and replaced by the current, neo-baroque building, which is built to the east of the original castle.
