The Volksdorf Forest is around 92 hectares in size and borders Meiendorf to the south.
It is almost completely surrounded by single-family housing. Its triangular shape is bordered to the west by the subway line 1 with the Meiendorfer Weg subway station.
The forest is crossed by many paths. According to the topographical map, its eastern part is called Schießbusch. In the southwest part begins the stream-like Diekkampgraben,
which leaves the forest at the subway bridge on Meiendorfer Weg, the remaining, larger part of the forest is crossed by a few, usually dry ditches.
The highest point is the 63.3 meter high Mellenberg, located at the eastern end, the tip of a terminal moraine from the Weichselian glaciation. As a round hill, it towers over the surrounding area by twelve meters.
The Volksdorf Forest is the remainder of a larger forest area, which gave the Hamburg forest villages their name. It has belonged to Hamburg for several centuries and has been managed by the so-called forest lords on behalf of the Hamburg Senate since the 16th century.
It is a mixed forest with predominantly beech trees. Previous spruce monocultures have been largely replaced by regrowing deciduous forest since the 1990s after severe storm damage. The forest is the habitat of deer, which have no natural enemies there.
Remains of a former observation tower on the Mellenberg are no longer visible, nor are those of the Volksdorf war memorial.
The same applies to a shooting range that existed in the western tip of the Volksdorf forest in the early 1940s.
One can guess the route of an electric narrow-gauge railway that crossed the forest parallel to Meiendorfer Weg from 1904 to 1923 and transported people between Rahlstedt and Volksdorf.
In the forest there is a Hamburg boundary stone from 1838 and a boundary stone from probably before 1872.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volksdorfer_Wald
