A memorial column commemorates the 34th division. This is in fact a monument to only part of the 34th Division, namely those of the RA (Royal Artillery) and RE (Royal Engineers) who fought here in October and November 1917. The actual monument of the entire 34th Division is located on the Zwarteberg (France). The column stands in a bed with an entrance with white stone posts at the front and a German bunker at the back. This fortification, in the mud valley of the Broenbeek, was an almost insurmountable obstacle for the attacking British units in August and September 1917. The concrete was largely poured between a formwork of fagots. The bunker has an entrance on the left and machine-gun openings in front (facing the rising slope across the Broenbeek towards Cannes Farm; it was from this slope that the 29th Division approached de Broenbeek on August 16, 1917) and on the right ( directed parallel to the Broenbeek). After its capture in September 1917, the bunker was set up as an Advanced Dressing Station under the command of Robert Lawrence, brother of T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia).
