In the 19th/20th In the 19th century the leather industry formed the economic basis of the city of Worms. In 1924 Carl Stock modeled the leather worker Karl Stein. The replica of the original lost in 1945 was cast in 1993 by Edwin Hüller at Kunstguss Eschenburg.

The tanner monument, as it is officially called, is intended to commemorate this.
