Wheels are puddles of water where you can spot all kinds of plants and animals. The many wheels in Bornem are silent witnesses of powerful dike breaches during major floods. They were created when the old dikes could no longer withstand the force of the Scheldt water.
The village of Nattehaasdonk was completely swallowed up by a storm surge in 1825. The archaeological site Huveneersheuvel and the information board at the Wintam Sea Lock 'Fort Sint-Margriet' provide a lot of information about the distant past.
Nowadays, the Groene Wiel is an excellent place for recreational fishermen.
