The Colosseum is the name given to the remains of a retaining wall in Bochum at the entrance to the former Krupp site on Alleestrasse. Today it forms the southern boundary of the West Park.

The 16 meter high retaining masonry made of around 2.8 million bricks was built in 1911 and secures the mass of earth behind it. On this area stood the Martin steelworks I.

In 1983 the works were closed and all buildings were razed to the ground.

Martin steelworks I from 1874/1889 and Martin steelworks II, which went into operation in 1912, with a gas generator hall, mixer hall, furnace hall and casting hall were located on this area. The hall complex was 300 meters long and 100 meters deep. In 1983 the factories were closed and all buildings were leveled to the ground.

The remains of the building in the western retaining wall and the adjoining arched facade in the southern area have been preserved. The building housed washrooms, offices and material storage. There are still various remnants of the former use, for example sinks and tubs. In the lower part there are still crawler passages that served as a substitute bunker for the workers in World War II and were part of a spacious, underground air protection system. The arched façade is currently used to present seven steel sculptures by the Bochum artist Friedrich Gräsel. They were already on display there in 1994, in the meantime in a traveling exhibition and since 2001 - after acquisition by the "Foundation of the Sparkasse Bochum for the promotion of culture and science" - they were placed there until the building was renovated. They consist of industrial standard parts, mostly round tubes, which the artist welded together into steel steles between 1985 and 1990 and painted in different colors according to DIN 1511.

The entire building was very dilapidated, with cracks in the masonry, the fifth floor broken off and the roof structure missing. In 2005, a renovation project was commissioned by the state development company of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Bochum. 40 unemployed people were to get a job through an ARGE qualification, which was heavily criticized by the Unemployed Forum Germany. In early March 2010, the square in front of the Colosseum and the building itself reopened after the renovation was completed. Since then, Gräsel's figures have been presented there again.

"... The entire Westpark extends at different heights. This is expressed by fortified embankments and retaining walls, some of which have to be enforced via steep stairs, ladders, ramps and bridges. These differences in height testify to the special architecture of this steelworks in the past To build the way up, the limited space in front of the gates of the city center could be used well and production processes could be improved.

The most striking retaining wall with vaulted arches made of bricks is located in the south on Alleestrasse. Due to the similarity to the famous building of the same name in Rome, it is called >.

This, too, was nothing more than the foundation of halls, which at the top of this highest level of the terrain also rose up and have now disappeared. Colorful art objects are set up in some of the vaulted arches on the street side. ... "
