The Gremberger wood is part of the green belt on the right bank of the Rhine and is a popular local recreation area. Even before entering the actual forest, you go through a true natural paradise. The forest is not only home to a large number of forest animals such as the mouse weasel and the endangered garden dormouse, but also important for the air quality and quality of life in Cologne, because it filters exhaust gases and noise immensely.

As a result of the expansion of the A4, part of the Gremberger wood is lost, as the work on another lane and the necessary embankments cannot be carried out without damaging the directly adjacent wooded area.

Fort X is located in the Gremberger Grove. One of the four forts on the right bank of the Rhine in the Cologne fortress ring.
During the Second World War, Fort X was partly used by the Luftwaffe as a material store and also set up by the civilian population as an air raid shelter during bombing raids.

Furthermore, in the western part of the forest area there is a small, well-kept memorial for Nazi victims surrounded by a hunter's fence. The texts of the inscriptions to be read on the memorials are self-explanatory.

Does anyone know what animals might still live there? I saw foxes, brown hares and garden dormice.
