The Wittelsbacher Palais was a neo-Gothic city palace of the Wittelsbachers in today's Brienner Straße 20 in Munich. It was built between 1843 and 1848 based on a design by Friedrich von Gärtner for the Bavarian Crown Prince Maximilian. After the end of the monarchy it became the seat of the Munich Soviet Republic in 1919 and the seat of the Secret State Police in 1933. In the post-war period, the Wittelsbacher Palais was demolished and the Bayerische Landesbank built on the property.

From October 1933 it was the headquarters of the Gestapo. In 1934, on the orders of Reinhard Heydrich, a multi-storey prison with 22 cells was built in the northern part of the garden, which was connected to the palace via an underground passage. Sophie and Hans Scholl were also imprisoned in this prison from their arrest on February 18, 1943 until the trial on February 22, 1943.

The Wittelsbacher Palace stood on Brienner Strasse, brick-red and surrounded by a park, for a little over a hundred years, and as if the palace, completed in 1848, were a gigantic theater set, royal, revolutionary and war dramas took place inside, as well as interrogations and... Torture scenes like from hell. The building, which was badly damaged during the war, was demolished in 1950 and nothing remains of it - with one exception: one of the stone lions that once flanked the entrance portal survived the bombardment and subsequent dismantling.
