Wannegem was already mentioned in the 12th and 13th centuries. The old name has the suffixes -inga and -heem, and literally means home of the people of Wanhand. The place was administratively dependent on the castle of Oudenaarde. In ecclesiastical matters, Wannegem belonged to the diocese of Tournai and since 1559 to the established diocese of Ghent.

Wannegem-Lede is a sub-municipality of Kruisem, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Wannegem-Lede consists of the village of Wannegem in the west and the village of Lede in the east. The previously separate municipalities were merged into Wannegem-Lede in 1810. Both villages also have their own parish. Later it became a sub-municipality of Kruishoutem. In 2019, Kruishoutem and Zingem merged into the new municipality of Kruisem, of which Wannegem-Lede became a sub-municipality.
