The bright yellow pins are a work of art called "Flying Pins."

It was designed by sculptors Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen and unveiled on May 31, 2000.

It depicts a bowling ball with ten flying pins. The artists saw a bowling alley on Kennedylaan, which is how they came up with the idea. In the artists' vision, the dynamic of the sinking bowling ball, with its flying and sinking pins, fits well with this busy spot in Eindhoven. The yellow color of the pins was chosen by Van Bruggen and refers to the yellow daffodils that brighten Kennedylaan every spring.

The highest point of the artwork is approximately 8.5 meters. The ball has a diameter of approximately 6.7 meters. The sculpture is made of steel and reinforced plastic with a polyester-polyurethane coating.

In 2000, Eindhoven received a new outdoor artwork: The Flying Pins. The Flying Pins is a colorful work of art, perfect for those who want to admire Eindhoven's art and sights in the fresh air.

The Flying Pins are easily accessible because they are located opposite Eindhoven Central Station. The pins are located at the head of John F. Kennedylaan, diagonally across from the station. You can walk to the flying pins in less than 10 minutes.

Like other landmarks in Eindhoven, The Flying Pins have their own special meaning. This artwork was created by two Dutch artists, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. The Flying Pins is one of their first outdoor artworks unveiled. Because of its length, they envisioned Kennedylaan as a bowling alley. The name derives from the idea of bowling, where the pins must be knocked down by the ball.

The color of the flying pins also has its own special meaning. The color yellow represents the many daffodils that bloom on Kennedylaan every spring. It also radiates energy and inspiration, which aligns with the city's industrial and technological side. And the color yellow is meant to bring a sense of brightness to the students of Eindhoven University of Technology, which is located right next to this unique landmark.

So, if you're an art lover, be sure to visit this artwork. It's free and open 365 days a year.
