Henri van Abbe was the man behind the Karel I cigar factories in Eindhoven. He lived a fairly simple life despite his wealth but still developed an interest in art. He had his portrait taken several times and had already purchased some paintings for his villa, a person has to do something with his time. In the 1930s his interest in art became more serious and collecting art and contact with painters became a kind of relaxation. In 1932 he proposed an amount to the municipality to build a museum of painting and so it happened. You can read the rest at brabantserfgoed.nl/passenger/a/abbe-henri-van

The Van Abbemuseum is a museum for modern and contemporary art in the center of Eindhoven. It has an extensive international collection of more than 2,800 works of art, including key works by El Lissitzky, Joseph Beuys, René Daniëls, Marlene Dumas, Sheela Gowda, Hito Steyerl and Iris Kensmil. About six hundred of these works are part of the collection presentation. The museum was opened in 1936 and is named after founder Henri van Abbe. He was a lover of modern art and wanted Eindhoven to enjoy it.
