The Kiel Canal was already under construction and increasing traffic on the Kiel Fjord was expected when the DGzRS decided to establish a rescue station near its outlet into the Baltic Sea at the end of the 19th century. In 1894, one year before the canal opened, Laboe received its first lifeboat. Today, the station secures an area that is equally busy for commercial and leisure shipping.

Germany operates the SAR for search and rescue in the air and sea. Due to the international nature of the tasks and also the areas of application, the term Search and Rescue (SAR, English for 'search and rescue') has also become commonplace in German for air and sea rescue services.
