Directly behind the church in Berneburg branches off a path, first over concrete steps, then steeply through a rocky cliff landscape up to the cemetery.

The Berneburg village community provided the path with steps and safety ropes so that hikers who are used to walking can easily get on / off it. If you come from below, in the first bend on the left side there is a rock formation that you can climb (caution is advised here because of the risk of falling and falling rocks), from here you have a wonderful view over the roofs of the village and can almost seize the church's golden weathercock.

The path ends in the upper area at the three linden trees planted by the associations, where there is a stone table, rest bench and a refuge. Directly at the end of the path is the cemetery with its historical and remarkable memorial stones and crosses.

The cliff path used to serve as an access path to the former chapel (1478) that stood on top of the Kirchberg.

Here on the Kirchberg, below the Kattenberg, there is an almost 9-hectare FFH area (Flora-Fauna-Habitat-Area). In 2008 it was integrated into the Europe-wide Natura 2000 protected area system under the name "Gipskarst bei Berneburg". The karst area is home to three inaccessible caves worthy of protection (Berneburg gypsum cave, Carolushalle, Berneburg cave), which are used by native bat species for wintering. The 100 meter long gypsum cave in Berneburg is the longest active water cave in northern Hesse. (Source: RP Kassel, action plan FFH, no. 4925-302 gypsum karst near Berneburg)
