This section of the trail is a true highlight: a narrow path, then wide again, near the Düssel River, with bridges and gigantic roots in the stream. Tall poplars and clipped pollard willows offer a clear view of the Schöller manor. For a brief moment, we feel as if we've been transported back in time, so pristine is the landscape. And yet, in keeping with the times, there are a few benches to linger on.

A romantic walkway under trees right on the rushing Düssel

Pollard willows are not just trees - they are a cultural asset. In the past, pollard willows were also of great economic importance because they supplied the willow branches from which baskets of all sizes and shapes were woven. In addition, willow branches were used in many regions for the construction of half-timbered houses: the fields of the half-timbering were provided with a willow weave on the inside and then filled with clay. The clay was thrown on both sides of the wicker wall - similar to the shotcrete today - and then the surfaces were smoothed out.

The ecological value of pollard willows is also very high: Little owls and bats, for example, live in the tree hollows of old pollard willows; around 400 different species of insects are at home on bark, leaves and shoots.
