Romantic city center: Houses, a fountain on the market square and a staircase with 72 steps up to the monastery cherries beckon with outdoor catering and numerous photo motifs. The buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries are very well maintained. A lot of what the ambitious detail photographer could wish for can be documented here.

The market fountain was donated by Mayor Peter Schnitzler in 1730. The column shows the Gräfrath Schöffensiegel, which has been handed down since 1483. The current column is a simplified replica.

bilder-von-solingen.de/html/grafrather_markt___ Umgebung.html"... Beautiful old town, today's meeting place - narrow streets with Bergisch half-timbered houses, an idyllic market square, surrounded by lovingly restored buildings, an imposing monastery church that towers high above - 72 steps lead up: Gräfrath shows the picture of a Bergisch small estate on pre-industrial Time: Well-preserved house ensembles from the 18th and 19th centuries and the reformed church from 1689. The historic town center is a listed building.
A landmark that can be seen from afar is the monastery church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt with its eight-sided roof turret and the "lantern", a turret-like attachment. The church is the oldest building in town, built around 1195 as a Romanesque pillar basilica and collegiate church of the Augustinian choir women. Today the image is baroque. The former monastery building now houses the German Blade Museum.
The old town of Gräfrath has atmosphere. No wonder that today it is considered the "parlor" of Solingen. Restaurant, café, ice cream parlor or beer garden: there are many opportunities to stop for a break.
Those interested in culture will find interesting destinations: the German Blade Museum and the Art Museum with the Center for Persecuted Arts are right next door. A walk through the Graefrath Heath to the Fauna zoo is ideal for a family outing. ... "

That's how it used to be: Time seems to have stood still in the old town of Gräfrath. You can still clearly see the pre-industrial small town it once was. From the late Baroque and Biedermeier period.
The entire old town of Gräfrath is a unique historical and architectural monument. The town center, which as a whole is under monument protection, has around 120 monuments.
Stroll through narrow streets with slate-clad Bergisch half-timbered houses. You will be surprised how lovingly the old buildings have been renovated.
You can see it from afar: the monastery church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt. It is not only the largest, but also the oldest building in town. Built around 1195, it received its current appearance after fires in 1686 and 1717 in contemporary baroque.
You can have a good time in this wonderful old town ambience. Around the romantic market square there is comfort for every taste: restaurant, bistro, café, beer garden or ice cream parlour. A historical excursion where you can enjoy good times.
