This small area of trapped water is a thriving habitat that could easily go unnoticed. Reed beds surround the twin meres, creating shelter for vast amounts of visiting birds as well as habitats for butterflies and dragonflies. You can find water rail, sedge warblers and winter wading birds here at various times of year, so keep an eye out as you walk by.

Also known as the summer route. Take notice of that bit....SUMMER. The wetter the weather the more waterlogged and boggy the route becomes. This is the second time attempting this bit in the winter. We made the right decision and came off as soon as we could, and back on to the winter route along the shingle beach.
