In the town center of the former East Frisian residence of Aurich, an ancient temple with four massive Doric columns at its front rises abruptly from the row of houses on Kirchstrasse: the Evangelical Reformed Church. It is the only neoclassical central building in the Weser-Ems region, designed as a round structure with a dome supported by eight Corinthian columns. With this extraordinary building (1812-14), the architect and master builder Conrad Bernhard Meyer created an outstanding example of civic sacred architecture. Since their restoration from 2001 to 2003, the church and organ have remained largely in their original condition and, together with the rectory (1859), form a culturally and historically significant architectural ensemble. The impetus for the construction of the church was a donation of 15,000 francs from Napoleon with the stipulation that it should be a "temple to adorn the city." The construction ultimately cost almost 15 times as much and brought the congregation to the brink of ruin! It's noteworthy that the Lutheran and Jewish congregations (whose synagogue, also built by C.B. Meyer, was located on the other side of Kirchstraße) also raised money for the church's construction!

More like a Greek temple. But it is a church. Built between 1812 and 1814. The only classical central building in the Weser Ems region.
