Graffham Common is a beautiful 38-hectare (94-acre) nature reserve owned and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
November 26, 2021
Graffham Common is a nature reserve between Midhurst and Petworth in West Sussex, England. It is owned and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, which purchased the site in 2009 and 2010. The reserve covers 38 hectares (94 acres) of land that was once part of Graffham and Selham Commons.
The reserve is being restored from a pine plantation to a mosaic of heath and grassland habitats, which support a variety of plants and animals. The site has a lovely acid pond, wet seepages, heathers, cross-leaved heath, hare’s-tail cottongrass, purple moor-grass, and other rare wet heath plants. The site also has a history of manorial fiefdom, as indicated by the name of "Gallows Hill".
