    Pewley Down for sunrise

Trying to get out for the first light of the year, we parked up in Guildford, took the canal paths before heading over towards the Chantries and onto Pewley Down for sunrise. With the paths frozen, no one around and a sunrise popping - we couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the year.

Starting from Tova in the South Lakes, we headed along the old railway line to keep away from the road before heading up towards Hole Rake, Wetherlam, Swirl How, Great How Crags and Old Man Coniston. We picked up a section of Walna Scar on the descent before cutting off across some slightly damp paths to take us back into Torver.

A circular 10km staying away from the crowds, heading to Bramshott Common and part way around the ponds at Wagoners Wells before climbing back up.

A day returning from NamChe back to Lukla our starting point. The path was actually super busy with people and donkeys yaks. This is the main route for transporting gas bottles and other supplies up and down the mountain, and somehow we timed our day to walk directly behind the donkeys, after awhile we realised we wouldn’t be able to run very much And just chilled out and follow the donkeys

A lesser trodden path from Lungden to Namche, this valley is absolutely stunning (super deep valley). The paths are quieter with less people and donkeys than the Namche direct to Gokyo route making it much more enjoyable. Would recommend taking this option. Perfect for trail running downhill.

Gokyo is a pretty bustling village in peak season, but during our stay it was a perfect level of busyness. The hotels and accommodation are set directly next to the lake (stunning) and views of the surrounding mountains. We set off around 7am trekking (not too early) with a view to be early at Renjo La Pass before any potential weather came in. The path up to the Pass is steady and pretty obvious, before the last few hundred meters of elevation where the gradient picks up and the altitude really kicks in. The effort is worth it. With views from the Lake and Everest in the distance, it's one of the most stunning passes and perhaps slightly less trodden. With elevation dropping, we managed to run some sections of the descent which gradually opened up into a Singletrack dirt path hugging the mountain side before dropping into Lungden.

The highlight of the trip for me, starting in the dark to tackle the Cho La pass at 5420m. A -17 degrees start was a little tough but we took it slow and steady, porter pace. The path starts off quite mellow from Dzongla, gradually climbing, the mountains slowly starting appear in the beautiful morning light. After around 1 hour, the gradient kicks up and becomes a little more challenging with bigger rocky features. Another hour in, crampons were needed to tackle the last section to the pass in the snow. It’s important not to deviate from the compacted snow path due to hidden dangers. The very last few hundred meters are quite steep but well worth the effort with the insane views. The descent is technical and often has lots of ice. We had a lunch stop in Thaknung before tackling the Gokyo glacier. We had to move quick across the glacier and pick the right path with our porters. The last climb out of the glacier up the wall is very steep, but you’ll soon find yourself in Gokyo with views of the incredible lake.

Kala patthar lodge in Thukla is a beautiful place to stay with a great vibe. As we were still adapting to altitude we slowly hiked this small section to Dzongla with our porter, thinking of the next day ahead. The section is beautiful, starts with a slightly steep climb before the path then hugs the mountain side, a couple of stream crossings and gradual climb before you see Dzongla in the near distance nestled in the mountains.

A day of recovering from a little altitude sickness in Dingboche, we slowly made our way very slightly up to Thukla at 4600m before heading on to the 2 of three passes. The walk up is short and would make a lovely trail run if you could breathe, running through the valley with glaciers and rivers to your left. Kala Patther lodge is the place to stay with a fun atmosphere and great food.
