The 456 meter high Gehilfersberg is a circular basalt cone. One or the other counts the Gehilfersberg as part of the Hessian skittles, a unique mountain formation in the Kuppenrhön. In the 16th century there was a cross on the summit, popularly known as "St. Gehülff", which gave the mountain its name.
The Gehilfersberg is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the region. The pilgrimage chapel "St. Maria and Fourteen Helpers" was built here in the late Gothic style around 1630. The chapel fell victim to an arson attack in 1996, but was rebuilt one year later in great detail.
A way of the cross with 14 station houses leads around the chapel. In the southeast of the Gehilfersberg there is a cemetery forest.
