The Wesel-Dattel Canal creates the connection between the Rheinstrom and Dortmund-Ems Canal. It connects the Ruhr area to the ports in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. There is a wide path along the canal where hikers and cyclists can enjoy the idyllic waterside.

"Built 1915 - 1931 as a Lippe side canal on the southern slope of the river basin in its lower course. The Lippe was laid in two places, e.g. in Dorsten.

As one of the most important and busiest shipping canals in Germany, the WDK overcomes a height difference of around 41 m over a length of 60 km in 6 canal stages. The WDK connects the Lower Rhine with the Dortmund-Ems Canal.

Each canal stage initially had a lock chamber 225 m long and 12 m wide. In 1953 the calculated performance of the canal had already been achieved. Therefore, from 1960 to 1970, a second lock chamber measuring 110 m long and 12 m wide was built on all canal stages.

In 1992/93 the lifting gates at all large locks were replaced. This measure was necessary because the steel quality of the old buildings no longer met the requirements.

Due to the increase in traffic and technical requirements, the route was expanded between 1966 and 1990. The canal has been significantly expanded and can now also be used by large push convoys."
