Beach at Sleeuwijkse Waard

Who says you have to drive to the coast for the beach? You will also find lovely beaches along the Boven-Merwede with a view over the water. The floodplains are also a nice place to stroll through.

The Sleeuwijkse Waard is a nature area in Sleeuwijk. The area is located in the floodplains of the Boven-Merwede between the Groesplaat (separated from this by the port of Sleeuwijk) and the Merwede Bridge. About half of the area is a former pilot whale, a small part of which is still under cultivation. The other half is much less wooded and is grazed by cattle to keep the area open, for the benefit of the flow during high water. There are a number of footpaths through the area and the shoreline beaches are popular with the local youth in summer. The area also contains a large beaver castle and the remains of a Cold War pontoon bridge.
