    Hiking

The Holschentor was a side gate that was only open in the summer months.

Oral tradition says that the gate got its name from the peasant shoes. The farmers from the surrounding area came to the city via dirt roads through this gate. Since the city authorities wanted to prevent the peasants from soiling the beautiful town with their clay-smeared clogs, the peasants had to take off their clogs at the gate before entering the town. A large number of wooden shoes, the "Holschen", stood at this gate on market days, which is why the gate was called "Holschentor".

"The Holschentor was one of the five city gates of the city fortifications of Hattingen. It is named after the Holschen farm, which was formerly in front of the city gate.
Opposite the place is a school building, built in 1868 at Talstrasse 8, which is now used as the Holschentor community center. "
