Rudolstadt (Thür) station is located on the Jena - Saalfeld (Saalebahn) railway line. It finally went into operation with the opening of the Saalebahn on May 1, 1874. The reception building was built quite economically. A goods shed and two switch houses were also added. In 1879 there were already two platforms and in 1881 the goods shed was enlarged.
In 1965 the Deutsche Reichsbahn renewed the Rudolstadt station tracks as part of a central superstructure renovation. In 1983 the facade of the reception building was renewed and the ticket hall was reconstructed. After the line to Bad Blankenburg was closed, however, track 3 was rarely used.
