The fountain's central figure is Apollo, the sun god of Greek mythology. He is depicted rising from the water in a horse-drawn chariot to begin the day.

Under Louis XIV, the existing basin at this location was enlarged and decorated in 1671 with the famous gilded lead ensemble representing Apollo on his chariot. The work of Jean-Baptiste Tuby, based on a drawing by Charles Le Brun, is inspired by the legend of the God of the Sun, emblem of the king.
