For the way back from Castelmola to Taormina the Sentiero dei Saraceni is a very good alternative. The entry into Castelmola you have to look for something. Then the path leads through gardens and meadows, with a beautiful view of Mount Etna and the hinterland of Taormina. The path is mostly paved and was even lit up once. The lights have fallen victim to vandalism and are now standing around as ruins. That's how it is in Sicily.
