In honor of his visit in 1787, this path was christened "Goth's Path".
Excerpt from his diary: Taormina, Monday 7 May 1787.
We descended towards the theatre, lingered in its ruins, on which a skilful architect should at least try his gift of restoration on paper, and then undertook to make our way through the gardens to the town. Here alone we experienced what an impenetrable bulwark a fence of agaves planted side by side is: one can see through the interlaced leaves and think one can penetrate through them, but the strong spikes on the edges of the leaves are sensitive obstacles; if you step on such a colossal leaf in the hope that it will carry us, it collapses and instead of getting across to the open air, we fall into the arms of a neighboring plant.
