There are still traces of Romanesque architecture in the sandstone basement of this building. This means that a building origin around or before 1250 cannot be ruled out. Consequently, the foundations of the local history museum are probably the oldest building in Langenzenn.

Until 1622, today's local museum was a cemetery chapel and was dedicated to the Archangel Michael, who overthrew Lucifer.

Until the 17th century, the cemetery was located between the Protestant town church and this cemetery chapel, just as in the past the burial places were often and occasionally still located directly next to the church until this century.

In 1568, the Ansbach marketgrave Georg Friedrich ordered the cemetery to be moved outside the city. However, the old people of Langenzen and their city fathers didn't want to know anything about it and postponed the matter for decades. It was only when the city and magistrate Hans Auer donated a plot of land in front of the upper gate (west gate) on April 23, 1593 that the cemetery seemed to become a reality. But when Hans Auer regretted his foundation again, the company was further delayed. The people of Langenzen also remained stubbornly reluctant to bury their deceased outside the city walls. Only the outbreak of an epidemic and the narrowness of the cemetery forced a change.

On December 18, 1607, a clear directive was issued from the prince that the new cemetery had to be opened with the first death in 1608. This case arose with a beggar named Heinrich who died in the Langenzenn poorhouse.

On December 27, 1622, the “Todtenkirche” or “Chapel of the Holy Cross” was inaugurated in front of the western city wall. This meant that our current local museum became free and, after adding a beautiful half-timbered floor, was converted into a Latin school.

The upper floor served as a teacher's apartment until 1815. The purchase of the house from the Melber (flour merchant) Johann Heller, which probably took place this year, cannot be proven with any certainty. He was followed by Friedrich Vogt from Melber. In 1840, the miller and melter Johann Georg Andreas Sörgel, who came from Prethalmühle near Altdorf, took over the property. He married Margarete, the daughter of Friedrich Vogt, then known in Langenzenn as “Vogt`n `Retla”. He was followed as owner by his son Heinrich and then by Hans Sörgel from 1905 to 1939. From 1939 to 1962, Wilhelm Sörgel was the owner of the previously agricultural property. The house came to the farmer Martin Weber in 1962 through Wilhelm Sörgel's daughter Monika. In 1963 the “Sörgel'sche Haus” was sold to the city of Langenzenn with the condition that it be made available for a future local history museum.

After 1964, the Langenzenn city library was housed here for a short time. In 1973, with a lot of effort from the local history association and support from the city, the conversion and expansion into a local history museum began.

On June 11, 1976, today's local history museum was inaugurated and opened to the public.
