The Vanšu Bridge in Riga is a striking cable-stayed bridge that spans not only the Daugava but also an exciting architectural history. Built in the last years of the Soviet era, construction work began in 1979 and the bridge was opened in 1981. At the time, it was considered the longest cable-stayed bridge in Europe, a proud engineering feat for Latvia. With its 109-meter-high pylon, the bridge towers prominently and connects the lively part of Valdemāra Street with the historic Kalnciema Street.
