This building in its current form dates back to the mid-16th century. Between the years 1652 and 1682, the Habsburg government of Upper Austria had its administrative headquarters in the house on Salzstrasse in Freiburg.
The building therefore had to fulfill representative purposes, because Freiburg had been the capital of Upper Austria since the Thirty Years' War, after the previous city of Ensisheim in Alsace had gone to France.
