The legendary Düsseldorf foundry boy When master Gabriel de Grupello created the Jan Wellem equestrian statue in 1711, the foundry boy saved the cast: he quickly collected missing metal - including pieces of jewelry from the ladies present - and threw it into the melt. The casting was excellent. Grupello himself is said to have erected the first long-lost monument to the boy. The citizens of Düsseldorf have not forgotten him either.

According to legend, the creator of the well-known equestrian statue by Jan Wellem, Grupello, erected a monument to his apprentice with this sculpture. The small statue stands just a few meters from the equestrian statue on the edge of the square.
