The former Imperial Post Office was built between 1898-1900 in the neo-romantic style. t was the first post office, it was the first post office building that had a rail connection, from the train station there was a connection with the electric tram directly into the building.

Although the old post office at Markt No. 10, the so-called Prinzenpalais, had been remodeled several times, by the early 1990s it had already proved completely inadequate for handling Altenburg's postal traffic. The significant increase in traffic after the founding of the empire, the unification of post and telegraphy (1876) and the resulting accommodation of the telegraph station and the city telephone system (1886) in the house were decisive for this.
