The original provision house served as a garrison church from 1675, and stables were later set up. After that it was used as a fire brigade depot and from 1994 it is used by the library.

Impressive half-timbered building near the castle and the arsenal that blends into the cityscape.

The granary (also called the provisions loft, grain magazine or magazine house) is the largest half-timbered building in the Lower Saxon town of Wolfenbüttel.
The building was built between 1659 and 1662 a few meters behind the stone armory completed in 1619 on the site of an earlier (presumably the second) armory of the then Wolfenbüttel fortress, which served as the residence of the dukes and princes of the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
The purpose of the building was to store provisions for the princely court and the garrison of the Wolfenbüttel fortress.
Before that, the attic of the armory served as a grain shed, but the increased demands of the court under the rule of Duke August the Younger required a larger solution.
So the cost-effective half-timbered building with a three-aisled hall was built behind the stone armory.
For visitors to the castle square and the castle, who look at the building complex from the south and southwest, the granary is completely hidden from view by the armory and therefore did not require any representative design.

Only the west side had a Renaissance gable and stone portal with corresponding decorations.
