The Schanzenturm is the formerly largest water tower in Europe in the Sternschanzenpark, which was built between 1907 and 1910 and was used by the Hamburg waterworks until 1961. After gutting it in 2005, the tower was reopened as the Mövenpick Hotel in 2007. The construction and opening were accompanied by loud and sometimes violent actions from the scene.

In 1682, the free-standing "Sternschanze" was built on a glacial sand dune - a star-shaped defensive structure in front of the Hamburg city wall, where the Schanzenturm is now located. In 1686, the construction proved useful, because when Hamburg was besieged and the later district of St. Pauli was even occupied by the Danes for five days, a Danish attack was repelled at the Sternschanze. At the beginning of the 19th century, the ramparts were demolished and housing was built in the surrounding area.
