André-Marie Ampère (born January 20, 1775 in Lyon, France, † June 10, 1836 in Marseille) was a French physicist and mathematician. He was the outstanding experimenter and theorist of early electrodynamics. Ampère explained the concepts of electrical voltage and electrical current and determined the direction of current.
