St. Lorenz Church is the nucleus of the city of Hof and the mother church of the region. The parish was first documented in 1214. From this original parish in the former village of Rekkenze, many daughter churches were founded throughout the surrounding area, extending into present-day Saxony, Thuringia, and the Czech Republic. Today, the Evangelical Lutheran congregation of St. Lorenz has approximately 2,200 members and is characterized by a diverse life in Hof's city center. The church was renovated in 2007 and has since once again shone in its traditional colors of white and red.

The Lorenz Church was probably built in the 13th century and is considered the mother church of Upper Franconia.
Jean Paul's mother is also buried here. She was born in Hof in 1737 and died here at the age of 60. Jean Paul wrote in a letter in 1798: "The thought of a small green spot next to the Lorenzkirche will be the only bitter drop that runs into the flower cups of my spring."
The text was immortalized in 1965 on a commemorative plaque on the north side of the Lorenz Church.
