In the first half of the 19th century, beggar musicians from Selbitz played at festivals with their Bockpipes (bagpipes). The Bockpfeifer are still present in Selbitz today and the Selbitzer are sometimes still called Bockpfeifer.

The longhorn piper can also be seen on the Selbitz city coat of arms. The figure of the so-called Bockpfeifer is reminiscent of a nickname given to the citizens of Selbitz, which arose in the first half of the 19th century and refers to the trade of traveling musicians, which the people of Selbitz often pursued due to the poor social situation at the time. The so-called goat whistle, which was made from the testicles of a billy goat, served as a musical instrument.
