A really impressive vantage point for such a small place Pottiga. Magnificent view of the Saale and the Saale valley - and thus on the former inner German border.
I had already wondered that there are so many cultural and nature loving young people;) The uploaded photo with the sign solves the mystery: There is free Wi-Fi: D
Incidentally, the road to Sparnberg used to be a Grenzerweg with concrete slabs, and right next to the road was the expanded metal fence. The madness can hardly be imagined these days. But I still see the picture right in front of me when we first drove there in 1990 ...

The name "Guard Hill" goes back to the Middle Ages, because it was the perfect point to discover any bandits of robbers from neighboring Franconia who were looking for the manor. The hill was later a popular meeting place. One would like to build on this again today. With the Skywalk and the pavilion, this was very successful.
Since 2011, the already unique view over the Saale on the guard hill has been reinforced by a skywalk. A bright green, 12-ton metal structure protrudes fragile over the mountain.
After 31 steps, which seem to lead directly to the sky, you stand in the observation capsule directly above the valley. From the platform there is a fantastic view over the deeply cut valley of the Saale.

Pottiga used to be completely isolated due to its direct location on the border. It's nice to see how much has happened in the small town since then. And it is also nice that the display boards inside the pavilion remind us very well of the inglorious times at that time. Pavilion and viewpoint are really very good highlights in the Green Belt.

The name "Wachhügel" dates back to the Middle Ages, because it was the perfect point to discover early on any band of robbers from neighboring Franconia who were targeting the manor. Later the hill was a popular meeting place. We would like to build on that again today. With the Skywalk and the pavilion, we did very well.

Very nicely made rest area, with top viewpoint.
Here you can not only treat yourself to a break, but also refill your battery at the coin-operated power supply points.
The information boards in the middle of the island are also worth mentioning.

The Skywalk in Pottiga - magnificent view over the Saale valleyPottiga is a small town on the southern slope of the Saale valley. It was first mentioned in 1325. Until 1918 Pottiga belonged to the Principality of Reuss j.L. and in GDR times it was part of the restricted area, i.e. a special permit was required to enter the place. The border ran here directly through the Saale.
