Hiking Highlight (Segment)
The columnar secretion forms of the diabase stem from the chimney filling of a former volcano. During the slow cooling of the magma, shrinkage cracks formed perpendicular to the cooling front. As is typical with volcanic rocks, the pillars vary: many are hexagonal, but there are also some with five, seven or eight edges. selbitztal.de/fileadmin/user_upload/pdf/infomaterial/2017-flyer-hoellental-geologie.pdf

The circular route (total just over 5km) includes the actual rock path (higher and leading over rocks, some stairs and steep hiking trails - good footwear recommended) and a comfortable walk down along the Selbitz. We hiked along the Selbitz and back over the rock path. Personally, I found it so much cheaper. In other direction you can rest on the way back, which is certainly not bad.
