The Borna town church is the church of the Evangelical Lutheran St. Marien parish of Borna. The community belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saxony. The important late Gothic building from the 15th century includes the west tower of the previous building from the 13th century, which is essentially Romanesque.

The church was built on the foundations of a Romanesque predecessor church. The oldest part is the stone tower from the 13th century. The new building is from the 15th century. The church was later changed in the neo-Gothic style in the years 1866–1868.

Despite its 36 m high church tower, the Borna town church of St. Marien has a hard time asserting itself in the cityscape. The lower floors of the mighty broad-west tower date from around 1230. They are therefore several decades older than the earliest written information about Borna as an urban community.

An inscription on the southeast pillar of the choir states that the foundation stone for the church was laid in 1411. In fact, it was a replacement building for a Gothic hall church that had existed long before. In the late Gothic hall church of St. Mary's, Hans Witten created the Witten Altar named after him in 1511 and 1512, a carved and winged altar that depicts the life story of the Virgin Mary, the birth, childhood and the suffering of Christ.
