History: Nieuwpoort-Bad was created after the abolition of Nieuwpoort as a garrison town (1856) and the dismantling of the fortifications (1861-1866). All the land on the coast had been bought by Benjamin Crombez and in 1864 the Société anonyme de Nieuport-Bains was founded. A Pavillon des Bains, or Kursaal, was completed in the same year. A small pier was built and in 1865 Nieuwpoort-Bad was connected to the city via a paved road, over which a connection with carriages was established.

In 1867, Benjamin Crombez built a summer residence there. Crombez then took over the development of the seaside resort itself. Part of the site was parceled out, the Zeedijk (boulevard) was constructed, as well as, among other things, the Herdrikaplein. The intention was that it should become a seaside resort of aristocratic standing, so that all kinds of tradespeople were barred. However, there were the Grand Hôtel des Bains, the Hôtel de la Digue and the Hôtel de la Plage and several others. It even published its own newspaper, Le Littoral Nieuport-Bains. The villa grounds were reserved for well-to-do relations of Crombez.

In 1867 a railway line from Diksmuide to Nieuwpoort-Stad had already been taken into use, and this was extended to Nieuwpoort-Bad in 1869. In 1877, the forerunner of the Sint-Bernarduskerk was founded in which various denominations could hold their worship. This building was owned by Crombez and was only sold to the Diocese of Bruges in 1907. The one-sided stamp that Crombez left on the seaside resort drew criticism, as in 1904: Nieuport-Bains est trop correct, trop bien ordonné, trop agencé d'après le gout d'un seul or: The place was over-organized to the taste of a single person. More and more people avoided the seaside resort, partly because other seaside resorts were developed, which were cheaper and less strictly regulated.

The outbreak of the First World War led to the destruction of the seaside resort.

From 1922-1923 the seaside resort was rebuilt.

The few remaining dune areas were protected in 2013 as a dune area west of Nieuwpoort-Bad.

During the summer holidays when the weather is nice, you can navigate between the many walkers and go-carts.
