The Flemish North Sea coast, that's 67 kilometers of fine sandy beach, sea, dunes, good food and ... art! Every three years, the Beaufort arts festival brings contemporary art to the Flemish coast: on the beach, on the dike or somewhere else along the coastline. In the meantime, more than 40 works of art from previous editions have already found a permanent place in the Beaufort Sculpture Park. A unique open-air museum that never closes. And it is free to visit! In Nieuwpoort you cannot miss it: 'Men' by artist Nina Beier shows off on its breakwater at low tide and disappears halfway into the salty sea water at high tide.

      Artist: Nina Beier

Nina Beier examines the sculptural tradition of public equestrian monuments. The popularity of these statues peaked during the reign of Louis XIV. He believed that a hierarchical ranking of men on horseback was the ideal way to display power. Beier shows us the ebb and flow of power by using the horse as a heightening effect. She collected monuments that were no longer in a public place and placed them in formation at the edge of the sea.

The allusion to an army runs through space and time as the statue alternates between being submerged by water and lying exposed as the tides pass.

A wonderful work! For Beaufort, Nina Beier collected statues that are no longer in the public space. She installed them in formation near the sea. Placing them in the unique setting of beach and sea, the element of prestige is replaced by drama, and the statues look as if one moment of a forgotten battle by the sea was cast in bronze.
