This cemetery was opened in 1824 and has since become the resting place of many famous Parisians, especially residents of the Rive Gauche. The Montparnasse Cemetery is the final resting place for many illustrious personalities, from artists (Man Ray) and writers (Charles Baudelaire) to actors (Jean Seberg) and comic artists (Charles Wolinski, 'Charlie Hebdo'). The cemetery tower in the middle of the burial ground is built from the remains of a 17th century windmill.
As in all French cemeteries, well-maintained paths divide the area, and numerous benches invite you to linger. Many Parisians come here on nice days to read a book in peace on one of the benches.

Open since 1824, the Montparnasse cemetery, with its surface area of 19 hectares, is after the Père Lachaise cemetery, the second largest Parisian necropolis. With many trees, the cemetery is located on the land of three old farms, of which the tower of one of the many flour mills listed as historical monuments remains.
