Overall, the Wehrgruppe Quitzöbel consists of 4 weir systems.
The Wehrgruppe Quitzöbel protects the Havel lowland before Elbehochwasser, serves the capping of a flood peak of the Elbe, regulates the water level of the Lower Havel and allows a Niedrigwasseraufhöhung the Elbe.

The weir group consists of the old arm weir with a boat lock and the penetration weir
fish pass. The two weirs were built between 1935 and 1937 and
are operated by the Waterways and Shipping Administration. Both weirs regulate
the Havel outflow including flood relief from the Havel to the Elbe via the Gnevsdorfer
receiving water.
