A special history of fossemen (miners) who in the 19th and 20th centuries started to mine black gold from the villages of South Pajot in the Walloon coal mines. Near the mountain were a few shabby mud houses whose inhabitants were mainly miners who commuted every day to the mines of the Borinage by train. On their way home they looked black and filthy from the mining dust, making them 'called 'of the Congo' by passers-by. Perhaps the comparison was made between Congolese huts and the rather poor mud houses on this somewhat remote mountain.
