The Congo Mountain owes its exotic name to the miners who used to live here. Around 1900 this was a remote area with poor mud houses. The miners commuted every day by train to the coalfields of the Borinage. They got up at 4 in the morning to take the train in wagons without any comfort. In the evening they returned black with coal dust. Hence the name Congo Mountain. They started working there because there was a lack of work in their own area. After the closure of the Walloon mining basin, this employment completely extinguished. In front of the church of Vollezele and at the station of Galmaarden and Tollembeek you will find three monuments in honor of these hard workers.
The (cycling) climb of 1.1 km actually starts from Eesbeekstraat to Huismansstraat.
