The city of Mannheim bought the so-called Lipsi wheel in 1964. In 1965 it was set up at the Carl-Diehm-Halle and was nicknamed the "mill wheel". Four years later a truck driver ran it over. Since then the wheel has had broken spots. After repairs the wheel was set up at the Kunsthalle. In 1975 it was given its current location. The wheel commemorates Karl von Drais, Carl Benz and Heinrich Lanz, who invented the bicycle, the car and the tractor in Mannheim.
